Sen. Josh Hawley urges transparency on Sen. McConnell's health status
Sen. Josh Hawley said Sen. Mitch McConnell's team should inform constituents about the former leader's condition, noting the impact on the Senate's narrow Republican majority.
Sen. Josh Hawley (R-Mo.) told reporters that Sen. Mitch McConnell's staff should provide clearer information about the former Senate majority leader's health, citing the need for transparency to constituents and the Senate's slim Republican margin. The 84-year-old has been absent from the chamber for more than a month after a fall at his home led to hospitalization and pneumonia. Hawley said the lack of votes from McConnell is affecting legislative priorities such as the voter-integrity measure and the SAVE America Act.
"At a certain point you do have an obligation to your constituents and the country to tell them what’s going on," Hawley said.
He added that he has not received detailed updates on McConnell's condition and hopes the senator recovers while urging the leadership to communicate the situation publicly. Hawley also expressed support for term limits, noting his own advocacy for a constitutional amendment, while acknowledging that older colleagues like Sen. Chuck Grassley remain active.
McConnell, who is serving his seventh term, issued a letter to Kentuckians explaining his prolonged absence, attributing the initial fall to mobility issues stemming from childhood polio and stating that doctors have advised him not to return to the Senate floor yet. He pledged to continue working on his legislative agenda and to keep his constituents informed about his recovery.
