U.S. conducts airstrikes on Iran's Revolutionary Guard after Jordan attack

Resumen

The United States launched airstrikes against Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps in response to an attack on American troops in Jordan, while regional tensions rise over the Strait of Hormuz.

The U.S. military carried out airstrikes on Sunday targeting facilities of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), including coastal surveillance, air-defense sites, maritime assets and missile-drone storage locations. The strikes, described by U.S. Central Command as intended to degrade Iran’s ability to control the Strait of Hormuz, follow an attack on a Jordanian base that killed two American service members, left one missing and wounded four others. Since the conflict began, 16 U.S. personnel have been killed and more than 430 injured.

Footage released by the Pentagon shows fighter jets and Tomahawk cruise missiles striking targets in Iran, including a mountainous valley where the IRGC is known to house missile installations. Iran has not disclosed its material losses from the campaign, which is now in its eighth day.

In retaliation, Iran has struck power and desalination plants in Kuwait and threatened further attacks on the United Arab Emirates. An Iranian news agency cited an unnamed official warning that continued strikes on Iranian civilian infrastructure could force the evacuation of Dubai and Abu Dhabi airports and the ports of Fujairah and Jebel Ali. The UAE foreign ministry responded by urging restraint to avoid broader regional escalation.

The Gulf Cooperation Council secretary-general accused Iran of war crimes for targeting civilian infrastructure. Meanwhile, the United States has reimposed a naval blockade on Iranian ports and redirected several oil-tankers to limit Tehran’s crude exports.
