Mbappé sets new World Cup scoring record with 22 goals
Kylian Mbappé's brace against England in the third-place match gave him 22 World Cup goals, surpassing Lionel Messi as the tournament's all-time leading scorer.
Kylian Mbappé scored twice in France's 6-4 loss to England in the World Cup third-place match, bringing his tournament tally to 22 career goals, the most ever recorded in World Cup history. The French captain's second goal came early in the second half after Dayot Upamecano delivered a precise pass, allowing Mbappé to place the ball into the bottom-right corner of the net.
The goals moved Mbappé ahead of Lionel Messi in the race for the Golden Boot and broke the previous all-time record held by Germany's Miroslav Klose, who had 16 tournament goals. Mbappé finished the competition with 10 goals, adding to his four goals in 2018 and eight in 2022, and he contributed to scoring or assisting in seven of France's eight matches.
Messi had previously overtaken Klose during the group stage, reaching 17 World Cup goals, but Mbappé's 22 now stand as the new benchmark heading into the 2026 tournament.
