Two U.S. Service Members Killed and One Missing After Iranian Attack in Jordan
U.S. Central Command reported that two American service members died and another went missing while defending against an Iranian missile and drone strike in Jordan, prompting retaliatory U.S. airstrikes against Iran.
U.S. Central Command said two American service members were killed and a third is missing after Iranian ballistic missiles and drones struck Jordan on Friday. The troops were engaged in a defensive response alongside Jordanian forces, though the exact location of the attack was not disclosed. Four other U.S. personnel received medical evacuation to Jordanian hospitals and have since been released, while others with minor injuries returned to duty.
In response, the United States launched airstrikes against Iranian targets on Saturday evening, stating the operation aimed to punish Iranian forces and reduce their capacity to threaten commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. The strikes were ordered by the president and were described as part of ongoing efforts to pressure Iran over the conflict.
Jordanian officials reported that their forces intercepted the missiles and drones, which Iran claimed were intended for a U.S. base. Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps alleged that at least two U.S. fighter jets were destroyed, a claim that has not been independently verified. The identities of the two service members killed will be released after families are notified.
