Josh Kerr sets new men's mile record at London Diamond League meet

Résumé

British athlete Josh Kerr ran 3:42.66 to break Hicham El Guerrouj's 1999 mile record at a Diamond League competition in London.

British middle-distance runner Josh Kerr completed the mile in 3 minutes 42.66 seconds at the Diamond League meeting in London on Saturday, surpassing Moroccan Hicham El Guerrouj's 1999 mark of 3:43.13. Kerr, 28, finished more than three seconds ahead of American Yared Nuguse, who recorded 3:45.69. After the race, Kerr told the BBC that the crowd support was strong and described his experience on the final stretch as a focus on his shoes, the track and maintaining effort. He noted that he did not ease off in the last 110 metres and was determined to reach the finish line. Kerr's previous personal best was 3:45.34 earlier in 2024. The mile, while not a championship distance, holds historic significance, having been the event in which Roger Bannister broke the four-minute barrier in 1954. Kerr previously earned a silver medal in the 1,500 metres at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
