Analyst firm says GTA 6 pre-order claims are inaccurate but campaign is strongest ever
Newzoo estimates Grand Theft Auto VI generated about $260 million in pre-order revenue in its first week, refuting social-media rumors of a $1 billion pre-order total.
Newzoo, a video-game market data analyst, estimates that Rockstar Games' upcoming title Grand Theft Auto VI earned roughly $260 million in its first week of pre-orders. The figure is based on $180 million spent on digital pre-orders in the United States and the five largest European markets during the last week of June, with an additional $80 million projected from other regions.
"That kicks off the strongest pre-order campaign ever recorded," the firm said.
Newzoo cautioned that claims circulating on social media that the game had already secured a billion dollars in pre-orders 21 weeks before launch are unfounded. It described such assertions as "absurd" and noted that no title has achieved that level of pre-order revenue to date.
"What the data actually shows is $180 million in digital pre-order spend across the US and the five largest European markets in the final week of June, translating to a global opening week of roughly $260 million, with most of the ramp still ahead," the analysis stated.
Applying its own pre-order curves, Newzoo projects GTA VI could generate between $3.25 billion and $5.2 billion in revenue during its launch week, potentially reaching $4.5 billion under its central estimate. The company also noted that the game will launch on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S, with a possible future PC release that could add further sales.
