Amazon Prime Video recasts Kratos in 'God of War' after lead actor's injury

Résumé

The streaming series will replace Ryan Hurst as Kratos following a bicep tear, prompting reshoots and a new casting decision.

Amazon Prime Video's adaptation of the popular PlayStation franchise will replace Ryan Hurst in the role of Kratos after the actor suffered a torn bicep during a stunt. Production was halted for Hurst's surgery and a lengthy recovery, leading the cast and crew to be notified of the recasting decision on Thursday, according to a source.

The series, greenlit in December 2022 and already committed to two seasons, has filmed several episodes in Vancouver. Showrunner Ronald D. Moore and director Frederick E.O. Toye will oversee extensive reshoots to accommodate the new lead. The existing ensemble includes Ed Skrein as Baldur, Callum Vinson as Atreus, Max Parker as Heimdall, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor, Teresa Palmer as Sif, and Mandy Patinkin as Odin, among others.

The show follows the narrative of the two most recent video games, depicting Kratos and his son Atreus on a journey to scatter the ashes of their late wife and mother, Faye.

"I’m sure everybody’s trying real hard, but it’s so dumb," said series creator David Jaffe, criticizing a promotional image of the characters.

Sony Pictures, Amazon MGM Studios, PlayStation Productions, and Tall Ship Productions are producing the series, with a team of executive producers that includes Cory Barlog and Naren Shankar.
