Herbert and Burns each post 62, tying major championship low-score record at The Open
Lucas Herbert and Sam Burns both carded eight-under 62s in the second round of the British Open, matching the lowest round ever recorded in a men’s major.
Lucas Herbert surged to the top of the leaderboard in Friday's second round of the British Open with an eight-under 62, tying the record for the lowest round in a men’s major championship. After an even-par 70 on Thursday, Herbert opened the round with three consecutive birdies and added six more birdies, finishing with a single bogey on the 18th hole.
Shortly after Herbert finished, Sam Burns also recorded a 62. Burns, who shot a three-over 73 in the first round, rallied on the back nine without making a bogey and posted six birdies, including three in the final three holes.
Herbert, ranked 97th globally, has not finished higher than 13th in a major and previously won the 2021 Bermuda Championship on the PGA Tour and three events on the DP World Tour. Burns, ranked 18th, is a five-time PGA Tour winner with his most recent victory in 2023 and has four top-10 finishes in majors, including a runner-up at this year’s U.S. Open.
