Brewers acquire Lance McCullers Jr. and Colton Gordon to bolster rotation depth

Milwaukee announced the acquisition of right-hander Lance McCullers Jr. and left-hander Colton Gordon in a trade that sent prospect outfielder Jadyn Fielder to the New York Mets. The moves come as the Brewers contend with injuries to several starters, including Brandon Woodruff, who is on the 60-day injured list, and Kyle Harrison, who was placed on the IL with forearm tightness.

McCullers, currently on the injured list, is expected to make a rehab start soon and could join the rotation as early as the upcoming series against the Mets. Gordon, a 25-year-old left-hander with an option year remaining and five years of team control, throws a fastball in the low- to mid-90s and possesses a high-spin slider and curveball, attributes the Brewers have historically valued.

The organization, which ranks among the strongest in minor-league development, opted to retain most of its prospect pool, offering only Fielder—a Low-A player with limited offensive production—in exchange for the two pitchers. The front office indicated the primary goal was to add depth for the final stretch of the season and the postseason, noting recent strain on the rotation after Misiorowski required extra rest following the All-Star break.

"We needed to address the immediate need for healthy starting arms," a Brewers spokesperson said.

Analysts noted that while neither McCullers nor Gordon meets the typical deadline criteria of being fully healthy and established, the low cost in prospect capital aligns with the team's long-term strategy of preserving its farm system while addressing short-term roster gaps.
