NBC Today anchor Craig Melvin says he is safe after intruder incident at studio

Résumé

Craig Melvin confirmed he is unharmed following the arrest of a man who entered a restricted area at NBC’s New York studio and used a racial slur, while NBC said it is reviewing security procedures.

Craig Melvin told viewers on Friday that he is "safe and sound" after an intruder entered a restricted area at NBC’s Studio 1A on Thursday. The journalist said the individual was quickly apprehended and placed under arrest, and that the network is cooperating with the NYPD in the investigation.

Co-anchor Laura Jarrett, filling in for Savannah Guthrie, expressed concern for Melvin’s safety, to which he reiterated his condition. Melvin also addressed the incident on Instagram, stating he was doing fine and would return to the show the next morning.

The man, identified as 41-year-old Andrew Truelove, confronted Melvin in a stairwell while seeking weatherman Al Roker. According to reports, he used a racial slur before being detained. Truelove, who has eight prior unsealed arrests in New York City, was charged with burglary, menacing, criminal trespass as hate crimes, and harassment. A security guard was reportedly dismissed in connection with the breach.

NBC released a statement saying it takes the safety of its employees, talent, staff and guests "extremely seriously" and is reviewing its security protocols while continuing to work with law enforcement.
