CDC reports thousands of cyclospora cases as social media fuels public anxiety

Health officials say at least 7,000 Americans may have been infected with the diarrheal parasite cyclospora, while social media posts have amplified concern and misinformation about the outbreak.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has identified a nationwide outbreak of cyclospora, a parasite that causes watery diarrhea, with reported cases exceeding 7,000 and likely undercounted. Michigan alone has recorded more than 4,300 infections, prompting state investigators to trace the source to leafy greens, though no specific farm or supplier has been named.

The illness, which can appear from two days to two weeks after consuming contaminated produce, is difficult to diagnose because routine stool tests rarely screen for the parasite. Health experts advise anyone experiencing persistent diarrhea to request a specific stool test, noting that cyclospora is treatable with a week-long course of the antibiotics Bactrim or Septra.

Social media platforms have amplified public concern, as users share personal accounts of hourly bowel movements and seek confirmation of infection. Influencers and everyday users alike have posted videos and comments describing symptoms that resemble cyclospora, while food creators have begun recommending cooked vegetables over raw salads.

"Just because cyclospora is making the news now, doesn't mean that that's what you have. You want to get tested and make sure you get the correct treatment," said Joel Barratt, a molecular parasitologist at Emory School of Medicine.

Health officials caution that self-diagnosis based on online posts can lead to inappropriate treatment. The CDC emphasizes thorough washing of fruits and vegetables, noting that vinegar or commercial disinfectants do not kill the parasite. Despite preventive measures, infection remains possible, underscoring the need for medical evaluation.

The outbreak, which began in early May, has also highlighted challenges in public health communication, as reduced staffing at the Department of Health and Human Services has limited the agency's capacity to respond swiftly.
