TSMC Raises Arizona Investment and Reports Strong Q2 Results, Citing Robust AI Chip Demand
TSMC posted a 33% rise in Q2 revenue and announced a $100 billion increase in its Arizona manufacturing investment, while its CEO said customer demand for AI chips remains very strong.
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (TSMC) reported second-quarter revenue of more than $40 billion, up 33% from a year earlier, and earnings per share of $4.31, a 77% increase. The company projected third-quarter revenue between $44.6 billion and $45.8 billion.
TSMC also said it will add $100 billion to its manufacturing investment in Arizona, bringing the total commitment in the state to $265 billion. The expansion includes advanced-packaging facilities that could allow customers such as Nvidia to complete more of the production process in the United States, potentially reducing lead times and logistics costs.
Chief executive officer C.C. Wei noted that signals from customers and downstream cloud service providers are "very strong," indicating sustained demand for AI-related chips. The comment reflects TSMC's view of a broad market trend driven by cloud computing needs.
Analysts have pointed to the results as supportive of the ongoing growth in the AI chip market, which benefits major designers like Nvidia that rely on TSMC for manufacturing.
