DeChambeau stays quiet after Faldo questions his strategy at the Open

摘要

Bryson DeChambeau posted a modest round at the Open but declined to comment on Nick Faldo's criticism, while newcomer Jackson Suber led the field after the first day.

Bryson DeChambeau shot a 67 in the opening round of the 154th Open Championship, placing him two strokes behind the leader. The 32-year-old American did not speak to the media after his round, offering only a brief comment to tournament officials about the wind and the crowd.

Former champion Nick Faldo had earlier suggested that DeChambeau lacked a clear strategy. In response, DeChambeau said he felt he had been "incredibly strategic and focused" during his round.

DeChambeau, who has been experimenting with new equipment and recently switched drivers, remains a member of LIV Golf, a circuit that is expected to undergo restructuring after the withdrawal of Saudi funding.

England’s Tyrrell Hatton, who finished one under par, said DeChambeau’s performance was not surprising given his talent and ball-flight ability. A missed shot on the 18th hole dropped DeChambeau from a share of the lead.

American Jackson Suber, making his first appearance in a European major, posted a one-under 69 to top the leaderboard after day one. He described the experience as "really cool" and noted his appreciation for the local towns and train system.

Other notable scores included Rory McIlroy, who finished two over par after a late birdie, and Scottie Scheffler, who moved from four under after six holes to two under for the round. Justin Rose posted a 75 and now faces a challenge to make the cut.
