One dead as Guadalupe River floods central Texas, echoing last year's deadly surge

Heavy rain caused the Guadalupe River to rise rapidly in central Texas, killing at least one person and prompting dozens of rescues, in an area that suffered more than 130 deaths in floods last summer.

Heavy rain in central Texas has caused the Guadalupe River to surge, resulting in at least one confirmed death and around 80 rescues, Governor Greg Abbott said in a social-media post. The river rose 32 feet in four hours, prompting the National Weather Service in San Antonio to issue repeated warnings to move to higher ground.

The flooding affects the same region that experienced catastrophic flash floods last July, which claimed more than 130 lives, including 25 children at Camp Mystic near Kerrville. Abbott emphasized that the recent fatality was not a camper and that authorities are working to protect human life.

Local resident Carter Lopez, who assisted neighbors during the event, described the water levels as unprecedented for the area. He said his downstairs neighbours were forced to shelter in his apartment after four inches of water entered their home.

Rescue teams have been wading through floodwaters to retrieve small children and other residents, while officials continue to monitor river levels throughout the day.
