U.S. Mint to Issue $1 Coin Featuring Donald Trump for Nation's 250th Anniversary
The Treasury Department announced that the U.S. Mint will produce a $1 commemorative coin bearing President Donald Trump’s portrait as part of the United States’ 250th-birthday celebrations, with a gold-colored finish.
The U.S. Mint has started production of a $1 commemorative coin that depicts President Donald Trump, intended to mark the United States’ 250th anniversary, the Treasury Department said on Wednesday. The design, which was approved earlier this year by the U.S. Commission of Fine Arts, was modified before release; the final version is not made of solid gold but has a gold-tone finish and shows Trump in a suit with a stern expression, surrounded by the words “LIBERTY,” the dates 1776-2026 and the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST.”
The reverse side features the traditional bald eagle of the Great Seal, with the inscription “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and the Latin phrase “E PLURIBUS UNUM.”
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the coin is meant “to honor the enduring legacy of liberty and a lasting symbol of patriotism.” Trump told Fox Business Network that he was “honored” by the decision. Federal law normally bars the depiction of a living president on U.S. currency, but the Treasury Secretary can authorize special coin issues.
The Treasury Department did not explain why the final design differs from the earlier approved version, which had shown Trump with his fists on a desk. The announcement follows a March statement that the president’s signature would appear on new paper currency, a departure from the usual practice of featuring only the Treasury secretary’s and treasurer’s signatures.
