New York State Issues Air Quality Advisory as Canadian Wildfire Smoke Returns

Resumen

State agencies have reissued a health advisory for particulate matter as smoke from Canadian wildfires combines with high temperatures, prompting officials to advise residents to limit outdoor activity and stay hydrated.

New York State’s Departments of Environmental Conservation and Health reissued a statewide Air Quality Health Advisory on Thursday, citing elevated particulate matter from Canadian wildfire smoke and a heat wave. The advisory follows a similar notice issued on Wednesday.

Governor Kathy Hochul warned that the smoke, together with high temperatures, will create unhealthy air conditions across much of the state and may be visible in the sky. She said state officials are coordinating with local counties to monitor conditions and distribute masks to vulnerable populations.

Westchester County health officials urged residents, especially those in sensitive groups, to take extra precautions. Dr. Sherlita Amler, the county health commissioner, recommended drinking plenty of water, avoiding alcohol, taking frequent breaks from outdoor work, and staying in air-conditioned spaces. She advised infants, people with asthma, pregnant women, older adults and individuals with heart or respiratory conditions to limit outdoor exposure until air quality improves.

The advisory remains in effect as officials continue to track smoke movement and temperature trends throughout the region.
