Summary

The U.S. House voted 308-117 to adopt the Sunshine Protection Act, which would keep daylight saving time year-round, and sent the measure to the Senate for further action.

The U.S. House of Representatives passed the Sunshine Protection Act on Tuesday with a 308-117 vote, eliminating the need for Americans to change clocks twice each year. The bill would keep the country on the daylight-saving schedule currently observed from March through November, unless a state opts out before the law takes effect.

The legislation now moves to the Senate for consideration. A previous Senate version stalled last year after Sen. Tom Cotton, R-Ark., raised concerns that permanent daylight saving time could create dark mornings in parts of the country, potentially endangering commuters and early-shift workers.

"It’s time that people can stop worrying about the ‘Clock,’ not to mention all of the work and money that is spent on this ridiculous, twice yearly production. It will also be a very nice WIN for the Republican Party. Take it!" – President Donald Trump, posted on Truth Social.

Public opinion polls show that most Americans dislike the biannual clock changes, though preferences for a permanent standard-time or daylight-saving arrangement remain split. The measure follows earlier attempts to address the issue, including a 2022 Senate vote that failed to advance in the House and a short-lived daylight-saving law signed by President Richard Nixon in the 1970s. Currently, Arizona, Hawaii and several U.S. territories do not observe daylight saving time, while 19 states have passed resolutions that would allow year-round daylight saving if federal law changes.
