Trump Pays Over $5 Million to E. Jean Carroll After Jury Verdict

Résumé

Donald Trump has fulfilled a court order to pay more than $5.6 million in damages to writer E. Jean Carroll following a civil jury finding him liable for sexual abuse and defamation.

Donald Trump has transferred more than $5.62 million to E. Jean Carroll, covering the $5 million jury award and accrued interest, three years after a New York jury found him liable for sexual abuse and defamation. > "Today, we are pleased to report that she has received the damages payment the jury awarded her as a result of that verdict," lawyer Roberta Kaplan said.

Carroll, an 82-year-old former magazine columnist, alleged that Trump assaulted her in a Manhattan department-store dressing room in the mid-1990s and later denied the claim in a 2022 post on his social-media platform, which she said was defamatory. The jury’s unanimous verdict in 2023 was upheld by a federal appeals court, which found no error in the trial judge’s evidentiary rulings.

Trump had sought to postpone payment while requesting the Supreme Court to review the case, but the Court declined to hear his appeal, allowing the judgment to be enforced. Lawyers for Trump described the case as a “hoax” and a “witch hunt,” alleging partisan motivation, but the judge ordered the funds to be placed in a court-controlled account and later released to Carroll.
