Counter-terror police re-arrest 28-year-old suspect in Ann Widdecombe murder case

Résumé

A 28-year-old man has been re-arrested on suspicion of murder and terrorism offences after the killing of former MP Ann Widdecombe, while investigators say the attack was targeted but not yet classified as a terrorist incident.

Police have taken a 28-year-old white British man back into custody, charging him with murder and with the commission, preparation or instigation of acts of terrorism under the Terrorism Act. The suspect was initially arrested on murder suspicion, released, and then re-arrested after counter-terrorism officers took over the inquiry.

Assistant Commissioner Laurence Taylor, head of Counter-Terrorism Policing, said detectives have obtained a further-detention warrant that allows the suspect to be held for up to seven days without charge, and that the terrorism investigation is running in parallel with the murder probe. He added that, at this stage, the killing "has not been declared a terrorist incident" and described it as a "targeted attack" whose motive is still being examined.

The investigation is also reviewing Widdecombe’s media appearances on the day of her death, including a TalkTV interview at 08:05 and a pre-recorded radio segment shortly before the attack. Local residents in the Devon village of Haytor, where she lived, reported feeling isolated by police cordons and road closures around the area.

Former prime minister Boris Johnson expressed sorrow, calling the circumstances "appalling and unforgivable," while Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood confirmed the suspect was not known to the Prevent anti-extremism scheme. Police and Crime Commissioner Alison Hernandez thanked counter-terrorism resources and urged patience as routine services resume.

"We are working to understand the planning, preparation and motivation behind the attack," Taylor said.

"This is a murder investigation following a brutal attack on a 78-year-old woman in her own home," he added.

The case continues to develop as authorities examine digital evidence and other lines of inquiry, with no definitive link to political motives or foreign involvement confirmed at this time.
