Connecticut reports 35 confirmed cases of cyclosporiasis since July

सारांश

The state health department said 12 additional infections were confirmed, raising the total to 35, and urged residents to practice safe food handling.

The Connecticut Department of Public Health announced Monday that 12 new cases of cyclosporiasis have been confirmed since July 1, bringing the statewide total to 35. The parasite, which causes an intestinal illness, is typically spread through contaminated food or water and most commonly produces watery diarrhea, though some infected individuals may remain asymptomatic. Symptoms usually appear within one to two weeks after exposure and the condition can be treated with antibiotics, but most people recover without medication. Health officials emphasized the importance of rest and hydration to prevent dehydration, a potential complication of frequent diarrhea.

The first Connecticut case was recorded on May 2. Of the 35 cases, 22 were linked to domestic sources, five to international exposure, and investigations continue for the remaining eight. Cyclosporiasis has been reported in 17 states, with Michigan accounting for the highest number of cases nationwide.

DPH advises residents to wash produce thoroughly, choose whole heads of lettuce over pre-washed bagged mixes, and practice regular handwashing with soap and water before meals. Kitchen surfaces and cutting boards should also be cleaned before and after handling food to reduce the risk of infection.
