Вспышка циклопароза в Мичигане связана с салатом, источник пока не установлен

Кратко

Более 2600 жителей Мичигана заражены паразитом Cyclospora, официальные лица указывают на салат или листовую зелень как вероятный источник, расследование продолжается.

State health officials said an outbreak of cyclosporiasis that has affected over 2,600 Michigan residents is believed to be tied to contaminated lettuce or salad greens. While testing has highlighted these vegetables, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services noted that other food items cannot be completely ruled out and no specific grower or supplier has been identified.

"Although we do not have a definite product identified as the source of the outbreak, we want to let Michiganders know what we have learned so far so they can take steps to protect their families," said Natasha Bagdasarian, the state's chief medical executive.

Cyclospora, a parasite that causes watery diarrhea, nausea and stomach cramps, is typically contracted through contaminated food or drink. The state, which usually records 40-50 cases annually, has documented more than 2,640 cases since the outbreak began late last month. Health workers have interviewed over 1,000 patients in an effort to pinpoint the source.

The department is collaborating with state and federal partners, and the CDC has reported 843 cases across 31 states since May. Officials warned that the investigation could take considerable time given the outbreak's scale.

Consumers are advised to wash all produce thoroughly and to cook rather than eat raw when possible. For lettuce and salad greens, the department recommends buying whole heads instead of pre-washed, bagged varieties, discarding the outer leaves, and rinsing the inner leaves under clean running water.
