Federal Evidence Turned Over to Minnesota Prosecutors in Good and Pretti Shooting Cases

सारांश

Minnesota prosecutors received hard drives, body-camera footage and a damaged vehicle from federal authorities, advancing investigations into the 2024 shootings of Renee Good and Alex Pretti during anti-immigration protests.

Federal prosecutors handed over previously withheld evidence to Minnesota investigators in the shootings of Renee Good and Alex Pretti, Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty said on Monday. The material includes hard drives with statements, police body-camera video and the damaged SUV that Good was driving, as well as other items collected by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for Minnesota.

Good, a 37-year-old mother of three, was killed on Jan. 7 while leaving an anti-immigration enforcement protest in Minneapolis. Pretti, also 37 and an intensive-care nurse, was shot on Jan. 24 during a similar protest. Both deaths prompted national criticism of the immigration enforcement operation known as “Operation Metro Surge,” which ended in February.

Moriarty said the new evidence allows a “full and thorough investigation” of the incidents. Lawyers for Good’s family called the transfer “an important and meaningful step toward justice and accountability.” The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, which now holds the federal evidence, declined to comment on its contents but noted that “great strides have been made” toward a comprehensive review.

The evidence release follows a legal dispute in which state and local officials sought reciprocal sharing of materials related to a separate ICE shooting involving agent Christian Castro. After months of stalled negotiations, Minnesota officials indicated that federal agencies had begun re-engaging on information-sharing proposals.

Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison said the delay was “deeply troubling” and expressed hope that the exchange marks a “major course correction” by the federal government. Moriarty indicated she remains prepared to continue litigation if necessary, while remaining open to a resolution.

Similar concerns were raised by prosecutors in Houston, who said they have not received identifying information about ICE officers involved in a recent fatal shooting of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo. Harris County District Attorney Sean Teare described the lack of cooperation as “highly unusual.”

The federal government has not responded to requests for comment from the U.S. Attorney’s Office, ICE or the Department of Homeland Security.
