NBA executives debate LeBron James' free-agency destination

Résumé

Western Conference executives say LeBron James is likely to choose between the Golden State Warriors and the Cleveland Cavaliers for his 24th season, while other teams remain in the mix.

NBA executives gathered at the Summer League in Las Vegas said the free-agency market for LeBron James remains open, with most expecting him to sign with either the Golden State Warriors or the Cleveland Cavaliers. While prediction markets have favored a return to Cleveland, several Western Conference officials told Front Office Sports that the Warriors present a strong basketball fit alongside Stephen Curry, and the proximity to James' family in Los Angeles adds appeal.

One executive said, "I would be stunned if he picked a team that wasn’t Golden State or Cleveland," and another added that the Warriors' roster and style make them a realistic option. The league’s power brokers also noted that James is reportedly considering the Miami Heat, Philadelphia 76ers, Minnesota Timberwolves and Denver Nuggets, but the consensus centers on the two West Coast teams.

The potential involvement of James' son, Bronny, who completed his second NBA season with the Los Angeles Lakers, adds another layer to negotiations. Multiple front-office sources said they have discussed acquiring Bronny should his father sign with their team, acknowledging his improved play and team-friendly contract. The Lakers, who drafted Bronny in 2024, may also seek to retain him as they continue to rebuild with younger talent.

Executives emphasized that James, 41, is not simply chasing a ring, noting his and Curry's comparable championship histories. The final decision is expected to hinge on both on-court fit and personal considerations as free agency progresses.
