Netflix shares slump 43% from recent peak amid weak guidance and rising competition
Netflix stock has fallen about 43% from its recent high as the company faces lower subscriber engagement, disappointing second-quarter guidance and intensified competition in the streaming market.
Netflix's shares are down roughly 43% from their recent high, with the stock losing 19% year-to-date. The decline follows the company's weak second-quarter outlook, a recent leadership change and the failure of a long-running acquisition effort. Analysts note that past drops of similar magnitude have sometimes marked a bottom, as in 2018, while other periods saw deeper falls before recovery, such as the 70% slide between late 2021 and mid-2022.
The firm is reportedly experiencing reduced subscriber engagement, which could depress ad revenue, limit data for content decisions and slow subscriber growth. Competition is also tightening, with Paramount expanding its library after a major acquisition, Disney taking a majority stake in FuboTV and Fox acquiring Roku.
"Netflix is exploring the launch of live TV channels and may consider bidding for future World Cups," a company spokesperson said, indicating a strategic push into live sports to boost engagement.
Despite the challenges, the company has previously introduced measures such as a lower-priced ad-supported tier and password-sharing restrictions to address subscriber losses. Observers suggest that while the stock may face further short-term pressure, its large ecosystem could support new monetisation initiatives over the longer term.
