Sen. Mitch McConnell says he is out of hospital and recovering in rehab

Résumé

The Kentucky senator, 84, confirmed he suffered a fall and pneumonia, has been transferred to a rehabilitation center and expects to return to Senate duties before his term ends in January.

Kentucky Senator Mitch McConnell, 84, told constituents on Sunday that a fall on June 14 led to a brief hospitalization and a subsequent bout of pneumonia. Medical examinations found no fractures, concussion, heart attack, stroke, tumor or hemorrhage. After four weeks in the hospital, he was moved to a rehabilitation facility where he is undergoing intensive physical therapy.

McConnell said he is following doctors' advice and will not yet return to the Senate floor, but he continues to work with his staff on legislative matters and constituent services. He added that he plans to retire when his seventh term ends in January but intends to complete pending work before then.

His attending physician noted that the fall was linked to McConnell’s post-polio mobility challenges, confirmed the absence of serious injuries, and reported that the pneumonia responded quickly to antibiotics. The physician said McConnell has been cleared to continue his rehabilitation program.
