Senator Mitch McConnell says he is regaining strength after fall and hospital stay

Resumen

Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell, 84, disclosed that a fall and mild pneumonia led to a brief period of unconsciousness and a four-week hospital stay, and said he is now recovering in a rehabilitation facility.

Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell, 84, said a fall that left him briefly unconscious and a bout of mild pneumonia required a series of medical tests and a stay in a rehabilitation facility. He confirmed that doctors found no broken bones, concussion, heart attack, stroke, tumors or hemorrhages, and added that he is "regaining my strength."

"My doctors have confirmed that I didn’t break any bones or suffer a concussion. I didn’t have a heart attack or a stroke. I don’t have any tumors or hemorrhages," McConnell said in a statement.

He explained the four-week silence about his condition as a generational reluctance to share vulnerability, noting, "folks of my generation often hesitate to share the vulnerability that comes with growing older." The senator said he cannot yet return to the Senate floor but will continue to work with staff on legislative matters.

McConnell’s absence, combined with the recent death of Senator Lindsey Graham, temporarily reduces the Republican Senate majority to 51 members against 47 Democrats, potentially complicating the party’s agenda on military funding and judicial nominations. The Kentucky senator, who plans to retire in January, said he remains committed to completing his term, stating, "I still have unfinished business to complete on your behalf, and I have every intention of finishing the job you elected me to do."
