Red Sox rally in ninth inning to defeat Mets in extra innings
Boston overcame a scoreless eight innings against New York, scoring two runs in the ninth and winning in the tenth as the bullpen held the Mets.
Boston's pitching staff limited the New York Mets to one run through eight innings, with starters Payton Tolle and Brayan Bello each allowing a single run. The Red Sox managed only four baserunners in that span, and none advanced beyond first base.
In the top of the ninth, Ceddanne Rafaela singled, followed by a ground ball that should have resulted in a double play but was mishandled by shortstop Francisco Lindor, allowing two runners on. After a walk to Caleb Durbin, Andruw Monasterio's walk brought in the game's first run for Boston. A subsequent pop-up was not caught, and Romy Gonzalez scored on the play, tying the game.
Aroldis Chapman closed the ninth for the Mets, sending the contest to extra innings. Boston employed a small-ball strategy in the tenth, advancing a runner with a bunt and scoring on a sacrifice fly. Reliever Garrett Whitlock retired the side in order, striking out the first batter, recording a fly out, and inducing a ground ball to secure the win.
"We are pleased with the team's resilience and execution in a tight game," a team spokesperson said.
The victory extended Boston's winning streak heading into the All-Star break and set up a doubleheader against the Tampa Bay Rays later in the week.
