Senator Mitch McConnell disclosed that a recent fall led to his hospital stay and ongoing medical examinations, and said he is now in a rehabilitation center.
Senator Mitch McConnell, 84, said a fall was the reason for his recent hospitalization after weeks of limited information about his health. In a statement released Sunday, he said doctors have performed extensive testing to determine the cause of the incident and that he is now receiving care at a rehabilitation center, though he does not expect to return to the Senate immediately.
McConnell explained the prior silence by noting that people of his generation often hesitate to reveal vulnerability associated with aging. He added that even in the public eye, he feels the same instinct.
"I’ve submitted to every test they can think of to help figure out what caused this incident," McConnell said, noting that doctors have ruled out broken bones, concussion, heart attack, stroke, tumors and hemorrhages. He confirmed he was briefly unconscious, was hospitalized, and also dealt with a mild case of pneumonia.
The statement included a photograph of McConnell with his wife, Elaine Chao, holding a newspaper, which appeared to address online speculation about his condition. Kentucky’s Democratic governor, Andy Beshear, had earlier urged McConnell to provide a transparent health update as rumors grew.
The announcement came shortly after the death of Senator Lindsey Graham, a fellow Republican, from an aortic dissection. Democratic Senator Cory Booker expressed his thoughts and prayers for McConnell, adding a comment on the broader political context of senior officials stepping aside.
