New Hampshire reports two confirmed cases of cyclosporiasis in 2026

The state health department said two residents were diagnosed with the intestinal parasite, noting the illness remains rare locally and emphasizing hygiene measures.

The New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services confirmed two cases of cyclosporiasis, an intestinal infection caused by the Cyclospora parasite, in 2026. The agency said the cases were identified through routine surveillance and that the state has not experienced the rise in infections seen in several other states.

Cyclospora is a microscopic parasite that can lead to watery diarrhea and frequent, sometimes explosive bowel movements, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The CDC reports that 31 states have documented cases, with 86 hospitalizations nationwide and no deaths.

"In the previous five years, DHHS has typically identified between 2 and 9 residents annually with cyclosporiasis. New Hampshire has not seen an increase in Cyclospora infections as has been reported in other states; there have been two confirmed cases in 2026," the department told News 9.

The health department advised residents to protect themselves by washing hands and thoroughly cleaning raw fruits and vegetables before cooking or eating them raw. Officials said they continue to monitor the broader outbreak and are prepared to respond if additional cases emerge in the state.
