Police are seeking Ahmad Al-Saqar, an asylum-seeker from Jordan, for questioning after he allegedly asked Jamey Carney for about $5,700 a week before she was found dead in Killarney, Ireland.

Irish authorities are looking for Ahmad Al-Saqar, an asylum-seeker from Jordan, in connection with the murder of 43-year-old Jamey Carney, a New York mother whose body was discovered in her Killarney home on Tuesday. Investigators say Carney told a friend that Al-Saqar had asked her for roughly $5,700 about a week before the killing.

Police believe Carney was beaten and then suffocated in her bed. They are reviewing her phone records, social-media activity and bank statements while also tracing Al-Saqar, who is thought to have left Ireland for the Middle East shortly after the crime.

Carney, originally from Westchester County, New York, moved to Ireland with her young daughter in 2021. She reportedly met Al-Saqar at a pro-Palestine rally in Killarney about 18 months ago and later claimed they had a religious marriage ceremony. A former roommate, Husam Salha, said Al-Saqar posted a video referring to Carney as his "bride" and that he told friends they were married in a mosque.

Salha said he learned of Carney’s death and Al-Saqar’s departure when he returned to his migrant accommodation on Tuesday and found police present. He was questioned for several hours and asked to contact Al-Saqar, whose phone remained active but did not answer.

Carney had previously been married to an Irish citizen who still lives in Killarney. Her mother and sister arrived in the town over the weekend to look after her 13-year-old daughter.
