Sen. Mitch McConnell reports brief unconsciousness and mild pneumonia after fall

Résumé

Sen. Mitch McConnell said he was briefly unconscious following a fall last month and has been treating a mild case of pneumonia while recovering in a rehabilitation center.

Sen. Mitch McConnell issued a health update on Sunday, confirming he was briefly unconscious after a fall in May and is currently dealing with a mild case of pneumonia. The 84-year-old Kentucky Republican, who has been hospitalized since mid-June, said doctors found no broken bones, concussion, heart attack, stroke, tumors or hemorrhages.

"My doctors have confirmed that I didn't break any bones or suffer a concussion. I didn't have a heart attack or a stroke. I don't have any tumors or hemorrhages," McConnell said.

He added that he has been transferred from hospital care to a rehabilitation center to continue regaining strength and that his medical team has not cleared him to return to the Senate floor. McConnell said he remains in contact with staff and colleagues and is working on legislative matters.

"You're right to expect your representatives to work hard for you," the statement read.

The senator's physician's office indicated he will stay hospitalized for physical therapy and to reduce the risk of future falls. McConnell, a childhood polio survivor, has previously faced health issues, including a hospital stay for flu-like symptoms in February and a bandaged hand observed during a May committee hearing.
