Vinod Khosla leads group to purchase Seahawks, proceeds earmarked for charity

Summary

Venture capitalist Vinod Khosla announced his group's $9.6 billion acquisition of the Seattle Seahawks, with all proceeds slated for a nonprofit linked to the Paul G. Allen Estate.

A consortium headed by venture investor Vinod Khosla has agreed to buy the Seattle Seahawks for $9.612 billion, the transaction that will channel the entire sale amount to a charitable organization established by the Paul G. Allen Estate. Khosla posted on Twitter that he is "excited to be part of this great franchise" and looks forward to seeing the money go to a non-profit. The sale, delayed after the death of former owner Paul Allen, marks a more than 50 percent increase over the $6.05 billion record set three years earlier for the Washington Commanders. Khosla, 71, immigrated from India in 1976, co-founded Sun Microsystems in 1982 and later joined venture-capital firm Kleiner Perkins. His wife, Neeru Khosla, is expected to become the controlling owner once the purchase receives approval from at least 24 league owners.
