Argentina defeats Switzerland 3-1 in quarterfinal to reach World Cup semifinals

Summary

Argentina overcame Switzerland after extra time in Kansas City, winning 3-1 to advance to a semifinal clash with England.

Argentina secured a place in the World Cup semifinals after a 3-1 extra-time victory over Switzerland in the quarterfinal at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City. The match, attended by 69,045 spectators, remained level at 1-1 through regular time and the first half of extra time.

Argentina took an early lead in the 10th minute when midfielder Alexis Mac Allister headed a corner from Lionel Messi into the net, giving the Albiceleste a 1-0 advantage. Switzerland equalised when forward Dan Ndoye scored after the break, and the game appeared headed for a penalty shootout.

In the 112th minute, forward Julián Álvarez scored the go-ahead goal, followed by Lautaro Martínez adding a second in the 121st minute to seal the win. Messi provided an early assist but did not score, marking his first World Cup match in ten appearances without a goal.

Swiss forward Breel Embolo was shown a second yellow card after a video review, resulting in his dismissal and leaving Switzerland with ten men for the remainder of the match.

"We are proud of the team's fighting spirit and grateful to the fans who supported us throughout the tournament," said Argentina's team spokesperson.

Argentina will face England in the semifinal on Wednesday in Atlanta.
