Two dead and several injured in shooting at Toronto salsa festival

Résumé

A gunfight at a street festival in Toronto left at least two people dead and six wounded, police said, and investigations are ongoing.

Police responded to reports of an active shooter at a salsa festival on St. Clair Avenue in Toronto shortly after 20:12 local time, finding six victims with gunshot injuries, two of whom were pronounced dead at the scene. Officials said the incident involved an exchange of fire between two individuals and that two firearms were recovered. Deputy Police Chief Francisco Barredo described the scene as chaotic and noted that about 13,000 people were present when the shooting occurred. Police are managing three separate crime scenes and have asked witnesses to contact authorities. No arrests have been made as the investigation continues.

"The person responsible must be caught, brought to justice and spend the rest of their life behind bars," Ontario Premier Doug Ford said in a statement.

"I am horrified by the shooting and offer my prayers to the families grieving their loved ones, those in critical condition, and everyone affected," Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said.

Authorities have urged the public to avoid the area while a large police presence remains.
