The CDC has confirmed 843 domestic cases of cyclosporiasis since May 1, with 86 hospitalizations and no deaths, while state reports suggest higher numbers and include California among affected states.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said it has confirmed 843 domestic cases of cyclosporiasis since May 1, 2026, and is reviewing more than 1,500 additional reports. The parasite, which causes gastrointestinal illness, has been identified in 31 states, including California, where health officials have reported between one and ten cases.

"The CDC is working closely with states to update numbers as additional cases are confirmed," the agency noted in its Friday update.

Hospitalizations total 86, but no deaths have been recorded. All reported patients became ill after consuming food in the United States and did not travel abroad in the two weeks before falling ill.

State health departments, such as Michigan's, have reported higher case counts; Michigan alone recorded 1,562 cases and 44 hospitalizations. Officials continue to investigate potential sources, though no specific produce or supplier has been linked to the current outbreak.

Cyclosporiasis is caused by the Cyclospora parasite, typically transmitted through contaminated food or water. Symptoms include watery diarrhea, loss of appetite and weight loss, and the illness can persist for days to weeks without treatment. Health agencies advise rinsing produce under running water, rubbing surfaces, and preferring frozen or cooked items to reduce risk.
