The United States and Canada announced on Friday that they have resolved remaining disputes and will open the Gordie-Howe International Bridge on July 27, creating a fourth crossing between Detroit, Michigan, and Windsor, Ontario. The 1.5-mile structure, originally slated to open in June, will be co-owned by the state of Michigan and Canada.
Under the revised agreement, half of the bridge’s net profit will be allocated to a regional development fund, and any toll increase of 10 percent or more will require U.S. approval. The same approval is needed if tolls are lowered below rates charged at comparable crossings such as the Ambassador Bridge. The original plan called for all toll revenue to remain in Canada until the $6.4 billion Canadian-dollar construction cost was recovered.
Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer praised the project, saying it will “speed up auto production, lower costs, ease traffic, strengthen agriculture, and give people on both sides of the border better-paying jobs and brighter futures.”
The bridge, named after hockey legend Gordie Howe, began construction in 2018 and was fully funded by Canada.
