Red Sox overcome travel delays to defeat Mets 6-2
Boston beat New York 6-2 after a delayed flight forced the team to scramble from Chicago to Queens, extending the game start time by 35 minutes.
Boston secured a 6-2 victory over the New York Mets on Friday despite a delayed flight that left the team stranded in Chicago for several hours. The Red Sox departed Chicago around 3:00 p.m. ET and arrived in New York just before 5:00 p.m., prompting a 35-minute postponement of the game’s start time to 7:50 p.m. ET. The team then had roughly two and a half hours to disembark, travel to Citi Field and prepare for play.
The Mets appeared fatigued early, with a routine fly ball dropped by Juan Soto on the first play, allowing Anthony Seigler to reach first base. Boston took a 2-0 lead shortly thereafter when Masataka Yoshida’s RBI was halted by a tarp, but the Red Sox continued to press, ultimately posting six runs.
"They were ready to play," manager Chad Tracy said during a mid-game interview, acknowledging the long day but emphasizing the team’s focus on the job at hand.
The win marked Boston’s seventh consecutive victory, extending a six-game streak that began after a previous travel disruption that saw the team return home early on a game day. The Mets fell to 40-54, remaining at the bottom of the National League East.
