UK police arrest 26-year-old suspect in murder of former MP Ann Widdecombe
British authorities have detained a 26-year-old man on suspicion of murdering former parliamentarian Ann Widdecombe, whose body was discovered in her Devon home.
British police arrested a 26-year-old man on suspicion of murder after the body of former MP and reality-TV participant Ann Widdecombe was found at her Haytor Vale residence near Dartmoor National Park on Thursday. Widdecombe, 78, had sustained serious injuries, according to Devon and Cornwall Police. Assistant Chief Constable Matt Longman said the killing does not appear to be terror-related and there is no indication of a political motive, while confirming the suspect remains in custody as the investigation proceeds.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer expressed condolences, stating his thoughts were with Widdecombe’s family and friends and noting her long career in politics. He added that the security of lawmakers is a top priority. The incident follows heightened security measures for politicians after the murders of MPs Jo Cox in 2016 and David Amess in 2021.
Widdecombe, who served as an MP from 1987 to 2010, later appeared on reality-television programmes and became a spokesperson for the Reform UK party. Former party leader Nigel Farage described the death as a reminder of the growing risks faced by public figures. The management firm that represented Widdecombe after her parliamentary career said she remained active in campaigning and was guided by her Christian values.
