Parents of Nolan Wells demand transparent investigation into his death
The family of 18-year-old student-athlete Nolan Wells, whose body was recovered after a July 4 boating trip on Horn Island, is calling for a thorough and transparent inquiry, while local authorities say no foul play has been found so far.
The parents of Nolan Xavier Wells, an 18-year-old football player at Southwest Mississippi Community College, have asked for a comprehensive investigation after his body was recovered on July 6 following a disappearance during a Fourth of July celebration on Horn Island, Mississippi. Christine and Elmore Wonsley told "Good Morning America" they want "honesty and transparency" and the same respect afforded to any other case.
Jackson County Sheriff John Ledbetter said investigators have not yet found evidence of foul play, but the inquiry is ongoing and will involve reviewing a large volume of tips, photos and video footage. He urged the public to be patient and to come forward with any information, especially recordings of alleged altercations on the island.
The family reported that Wells' phone, tracked through the Life360 app, showed deleted messages and that his Snapchat accounts contained no recent activity. Civil-rights attorney Ben Crump, representing the family, said the lack of phone data and reports of a recorded argument among the students on the boat raise unanswered questions. Crump added that the family plans an independent autopsy in Washington, D.C.
Authorities continue to request anyone who was on or near the northwest tip of Horn Island to provide any relevant observations, emphasizing that even seemingly minor details could aid the investigation.
