Michigan and Ohio see over 1,500 cyclosporiasis cases as CDC probes source

More than 1,200 cases have been reported in Michigan and over 500 in Ohio, prompting a multi-agency investigation into the source of the parasitic infection.

Health officials in Michigan and Ohio have reported a combined total of over 1,700 cyclosporiasis infections, the largest outbreak of the parasite in Michigan’s history. Michigan confirmed more than 1,200 cases and at least 40 hospitalizations, while Ohio’s northwest counties, including Lucas County, have identified more than 500 cases.

The parasite, which causes watery diarrhea that can persist for weeks, was first noted in Michigan in late June, with the state typically seeing about 50 cases annually. Similar spikes have been recorded in 28 other states, including Texas, which reported 48 cases.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says the infection’s hallmark symptom is prolonged watery diarrhea, often accompanied by abdominal cramping, nausea, fatigue and weight loss. While the illness can sometimes resolve without treatment, antibiotics are frequently required, and the CDC advises anyone with symptoms to seek medical testing.

"The CDC, alongside the Food and Drug Administration and state health officials, is actively investigating several multistate clusters, but they have yet to find a cause behind the spread," a CDC spokesperson said.

Past outbreaks have been linked to contaminated fresh produce or irrigation water. Officials recommend washing produce thoroughly, opting for whole heads of lettuce rather than pre-washed bags, and removing outer leaves before washing or cooking vegetables when possible.

The outbreak season for cyclospora runs from May 1 through August 31, a period when warmer temperatures historically coincide with higher infection rates.
