Vikings coach O'Connell says open QB competition will drive team success
Head coach Kevin O'Connell emphasized that a continual quarterback battle between Kyler Murray and J.J. McCarthy is essential for the Minnesota Vikings to return to a winning standard.
Minnesota Vikings head coach Kevin O'Connell said the quarterback competition will remain open as training camp begins, noting that a “daily attempt to have guys push each other” is the best way to reach the team’s performance goals. He told The Dan Patrick Show that he has never heard of a “closed competition” and highlighted the contributions of both Kyler Murray and J.J. McCarthy during the offseason program.
"Kyler has come in and done a great job," O'Connell said, adding that McCarthy has benefited from the rivalry and had a strong spring. The veteran Carson Wentz also remains in the quarterback room, providing additional experience. O'Connell referenced the Vikings’ recent seasons when a single starter led the team to 13 and 14 wins, stating the aim is to restore a quarterback-driven winning culture by having players excel in their roles and support the talent around them.
