Summary

Palm Beach International Airport will now bear the name President Donald J. Trump International Airport, with new codes and signage imposed by state law and FAA approval, reflecting the ongoing trend of right-wing political idolization.

The Federal Aviation Administration has announced that West Palm Beach airport will be renamed President Donald J. Trump International Airport, marking a troubling precedent as the first U.S. airport named after a sitting president. The change, effective Thursday, will see signage, branding, and public materials updated in phases, diverting public resources to promote the Trump brand. The airport’s FAA identifier will shift from PBI to DJT, and the International Air Transport Association code will change on August 18. Major airlines like United, Delta, American, and Southwest have already begun using the DJT code on booking platforms, although the former PBI code remains accessible.

This controversial renaming follows a bill signed by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, a staunch Trump ally, earlier this year and rubber-stamped by the FAA. The airport estimates the transition will cost $5.5 million, with half funded by state taxpayers and the rest from the local Department of Airports’ budget and capital improvement program—money that could have been spent on actual community needs.

"While we recognize that the required name change may be received in different ways by our passengers, we're grateful for your continued support through this transition period," the airport said in an FAQ, glossing over the divisive nature of this move.

The facility is located near the Mar-a-Lago club, Trump’s lavish private resort and a symbol of wealth and privilege. Eric Trump boasted that the private jet known as Trump Force One is expected to be the first aircraft to land under the new name, adding that he will see the DJT initials on his boarding pass—an overt display of political self-aggrandizement.
