Trump Switches to Older Air Force One for Turkey-UK Flight Amid Security Concerns

President Donald Trump used the older Air Force One for his Ankara-Mildenhall trip after Secret Service advice, raising questions about the security capabilities of the Qatar-gifted jet.

President Donald Trump flew from Ankara, Turkey, to Mildenhall in the United Kingdom on the older Air Force One aircraft, before returning to the Qatar-gifted jet for his flight back to Andrews Air Force Base. The change was reportedly made on the recommendation of Secret Service officials, who said the newer plane lacks some of the security features of the legacy aircraft.

When asked whether the switch was linked to the renewed tensions with Iran, Trump replied that he is "number one on the kill list for Iran" and suggested that threats are a constant concern. He later added that he faces a continual threat and hinted at the seriousness of any potential attack.

Former Air Force Secretary Frank Kendall questioned whether the Qatar-gifted jet meets the standard security and command-and-control requirements of a traditional Air Force One, noting that such modifications typically take years and billions of dollars. A senior Trump administration official countered that the aircraft underwent the same safety protocols as previous presidential planes and is FAA-certified. An Air Force spokesperson said the jet is "safe, secure and equipped with the most advanced technologies necessary to meet the requirements of the presidential mission," emphasizing that critical mission needs were prioritized over aesthetics.

The gifted aircraft, accepted in May 2023, has been described as a temporary "bridge" plane while Boeing works on two custom Air Force One replacements. The Air Force reported spending less than $400 million on security upgrades, though some analysts estimate the total cost could approach $1 billion. Trump has indicated the plane may eventually be displayed at his presidential library in Miami after his term ends.
