Lakers explore cap-space moves to pursue free-agent Jonathan Kuminga

Resumen

The Los Angeles Lakers, facing limited salary-cap flexibility after recent signings, are reportedly working to improve an offer for forward Jonathan Kuminga, including possible roster and contract adjustments.

The Los Angeles Lakers are reportedly seeking ways to increase salary-cap space in order to present a more attractive contract to free-agent forward Jonathan Kuminga. After committing to several deals—including re-signing Austin Reaves, signing Collin Sexton on a mid-level exception and adding Kevon Looney on a veteran-minimum contract—the team is projected to be only about $1.9 million under the cap, insufficient for a new minimum contract.

According to ESPN reporter Anthony Slater, the Lakers have been "subtly improving their offer in recent days while reiterating to Kuminga his importance to what the Lakers are building around Luka Dončić, a likely starting role and what the opportunity could do for his career." The Los Angeles Times later reported that the club has presented Kuminga with a two-year, $20 million proposal.

Analysts suggest the Lakers could free additional cap space by moving forward Jarred Vanderbilt, either by trading his $12.4 million salary or by waiving and stretching his remaining $25.7 million contract over five years, which would create roughly $7.3 million in additional space. Combined with the existing $1.9 million, this could allow a two-year, $18.8 million offer for Kuminga.

Further options include offloading Dalton Knecht on a minimum deal or moving recently acquired Jaden Hardy for a lower-salary player. President of Basketball Operations Rob Pelinka would need to approve any such transactions.

The Lakers have limited tradable draft assets, having traded away most first-round picks through 2033 and retaining only a 2032 pick-swap right and a few second-round selections. This scarcity may affect the feasibility of a salary-dump involving Vanderbilt.

Overall, while the Lakers have a plausible path to offer Kuminga a contract in the vicinity of $10 million per season, any proposal exceeding $20 million would likely require additional roster moves.
