ICE officer kills man in Houston during vehicle stop

Resumen

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement says an agent shot and killed Lorenzo Salgado Araujo in Houston after he failed to stop his vehicle, prompting calls for an independent investigation.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) said an immigration agent shot and killed Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, a Mexican national, in Houston, Texas, on Tuesday while officers attempted to stop his vehicle during a targeted enforcement operation.

According to the Department of Homeland Security, Salgado Araujo ignored multiple verbal commands, rammed an ICE vehicle and attempted to run over an officer, prompting the use of lethal force.

Surveillance video obtained by Reuters shows a person lying on the ground beside a white van surrounded by officers after the shooting.

Democratic Representative Sylvia Garcia called for a full, impartial investigation, stating, "All available footage, communications, and other evidence should be preserved and reviewed as part of a full and impartial investigation."

Juan Proano, chief executive of the League of United Latin American Citizens, added, "We don’t take DHS at their word at all. There should be an independent investigation, and they should release all the videos."

The incident adds to at least six fatal shootings involving federal immigration officers since the start of President Donald Trump's immigration enforcement policies. Reuters reported a recent rise in ICE arrests, with about 2,000 migrants detained daily last week.
