Petition Against Sony's Plan to End PlayStation Disc Production Gains 170,000 Signatures

Résumé

A petition urging Sony to continue manufacturing PlayStation physical discs has attracted more than 170,000 supporters, while the company has not publicly responded to the campaign.

A petition titled “Don’t Kill the Disc” has collected over 170,000 signatures since it was launched following Sony’s announcement that it will cease production of physical PlayStation discs in January 2028. The campaign, initiated by Canadian retailer PNP Games, argues that ending disc releases will limit consumer ownership, reduce market choice and hinder game preservation.

"At E3 2013, Sony won over a generation of players by promising that when you buy a PlayStation game, you can trade it in, sell it, lend it to a friend, or 'keep it forever,' and famously mocked the competition for trying to restrict exactly that," the petition states, adding that the company is now reversing that promise.

The petition calls on Sony to maintain disc production beyond 2028 so that future gamers can own, rather than merely rent, their titles. It warns that the market leader’s shift away from physical media could prompt the rest of the industry to follow suit.

Sony has not issued an official comment on the petition. Its PlayStation account on X remained silent for nearly a week after the announcement, posting only a recent FlexStrike fight-stick update.

Industry observers note that Sony has cited consumer trends as the rationale for the move, a point highlighted by Eurogamer editor-in-chief Chris Tapsell. While the petition’s impact remains uncertain, supporters hope it will pressure Sony to reconsider its strategy.
