Mourners Gather in Tehran for Ayatollah Khamenei's Funeral Amid Calls for Retaliation
Thousands attended the funeral procession for Iran's late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in Tehran, with some participants chanting slogans against the United States and Israel.
Thousands of mourners in black gathered in Tehran on Monday as the coffin of Iran's late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was carried through the city. The funeral procession also included the coffins of family members killed in a February 28 airstrike that marked the start of the conflict involving the United States and Israel.
State media reported that the ceremony was presented as a demonstration of national unity while the Iranian government continues negotiations with Washington over a cease-fire. Participants were observed holding signs and banners that referenced President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and some chants called for retaliation against the United States and Israel.
One mourner, identified as Fatima Hassan, told reporters, "We are not here to say goodbye to him. We are here for revenge. And we will take revenge."
After the procession, Khamenei's casket was flown to the Shiite seminary city of Qom, where additional honors are planned.
