CDC reports Cyclospora outbreak affecting 145 people in 17 states

Résumé

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed at least 145 cases of Cyclospora cayetanensis infection across 17 states, including Texas, with 20 hospitalizations and no deaths.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has identified an outbreak of Cyclospora cayetanensis, a microscopic parasite that causes gastrointestinal illness, in at least 145 individuals across 17 states, including Texas. No fatalities have been reported, but 20 patients have required hospitalization.

The parasite spreads through ingestion of contaminated food or water, most commonly linked to produce such as fruits and vegetables that have been exposed to human fecal matter. Health officials advise washing produce thoroughly before consumption and washing hands with soap and water, noting that alcohol-based sanitizers are ineffective against this organism.

Symptoms typically include severe, watery diarrhea, abdominal cramps, bloating, increased gas and nausea. While many healthy individuals recover without medical intervention, the illness can persist for several days to over a month. The CDC recommends that anyone experiencing persistent diarrhea consult a healthcare provider for possible treatment.

San Antonio Metro Health confirmed awareness of the outbreak but reported no local cases to date. Officials also cautioned against swallowing recreational water and advised individuals with diarrhea to avoid public pools.
