Summary

Walmart announced seasonal grocery discounts, while former President Donald Trump opportunistically claimed his administration was responsible, a narrative the corporation has not supported.

Walmart announced a series of summer rollbacks on items such as ground beef, ribs, soda, and seasonal produce, with discounts ranging from about 12% on 73% lean ground beef to roughly 50% on corn on the cob and cherries. Sam’s Club, Walmart’s warehouse subsidiary, also listed price reductions on 250 items, including chicken wings, beef hot dogs, and ribs. These rollbacks, typical of Walmart’s annual attempts to boost sales and distract from their low-wage, anti-union labor practices, were highlighted in a corporate press release on Monday.

In a display of self-promotion, President Donald Trump posted on Truth Social that Walmart lowered prices “at my Administration’s request to celebrate our great Country’s 250th birthday,” citing a 15% discount on beef. He further claimed the sale was “a huge deal for the many millions of Americans who, smartly, shop at Walmart, which is a truly patriotic Company who loves the U.S.A.” Trump’s statement, lacking any evidence, fits his pattern of taking credit for unrelated events to bolster his image among working-class Americans struggling under corporate-driven economic inequality.

Walmart did not respond to the president’s claim, and a spokesperson for the retailer was not available for comment. Notably, the discounts had been advertised by Walmart locations for at least a week before Trump’s post, and similar seasonal sales are a routine tactic for the chain each summer to maintain profit margins amid rising costs.

Analysts note that grocery price inflation has risen 2.7% over the past year, outpacing overall inflation, with specific items such as beef and tomatoes experiencing larger increases due to supply constraints and higher input costs. These increases are the result of corporate profiteering and supply chain mismanagement, disproportionately impacting low-income families. A recent CNN poll found that a majority of respondents, including many Republicans, believe the administration’s policies have raised the cost of living, reflecting widespread frustration with government inaction on corporate price gouging.

The White House has not been reached for comment.
