Belgium mocks FIFA and Trump after 4-1 World Cup victory over USA
Belgium posted a message on social media criticizing FIFA's decision to overturn a red card involving U.S. striker Folarin Balogun, and celebrated their 4-1 win with a gesture referencing President Donald Trump.
Belgium's official X account posted an image of its players celebrating after a 4-1 World Cup win over the United States, adding the caption "Overturn this." The message referred to FIFA's reversal of a red card given to U.S. forward Folarin Balogen in the previous round, a decision that some observers said broke precedent.
Balogan had been sent off after video review upgraded a non-call to a red card, which under FIFA rules would have suspended him for the match against Belgium. FIFA later announced the red card was rescinded, allowing him to play.
President Donald Trump said he had contacted FIFA to request a review of the red card, a claim confirmed by FIFA president Gianni Infantino, who said the final decision was made independently.
During the match, Belgian players performed a dance in the 90th minute that resembled a move often seen at Trump rallies, which was interpreted as a jab at the president. Belgium will next face Spain in the quarterfinals.
